Thanks once again to Gabriela Tudor for her guest blog post.

Recently 6 million Instagram accounts were hacked, including those of some of the biggest names and celebs such as Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and plenty more. But just how did this happen?

In the aftermath, Instagram released a statement saying that a vulnerability was fixed, now protecting the customers phone number and contact email addresses associated with the emails. While this information was supposed to be private anyway, unauthorised parties managed to obtained access to it making it possible for the hacking.

So, how can you protect yourself?

  1. Use a strong password – You may be tempted to opt for one you’ve used before, or a familiar date or name but where possible try and use something unique and complicated. If you’re struggling invest in a password manager.
  2. Use multifactor authentication – Make sure that any logins are verified by enabling two-factor authentication, meaning you’ll be notified whenever anyone attempts to access your account.
  3. Keep your Instagram app up to date – Having the latest version on your device is important to keep it secure.
  4. Do not respond, reply, click on any emails received as being from Instagram – Instead, use the app for any issues you may have.
